Challenging setting in Europe, but some positive signs Q2 2013

The challenging economic climate in Europe continues to weigh on the region’s commercial property sector. Indeed, the economy is contracting and the labour market is deteriorating. Against this challenging macroeconomic backdrop, it is perhaps unsurprising that sentiment in the occupier and investment markets is, on the whole, downbeat.

The new RICS Occupier Sentiment Index (OSI)* - which is intended as a summary measure of sentiment in the occupier market - returned negative readings for most of the countries included in the survey. Greece and France stand at the bottom of the country rankings, while Germany and Belgium are at top and were the only two countries to record positive readings.

Meanwhile, new RICS Investment Sentiment Index (ISI) – which is intended as a summary measure of sentiment in the investment market - also returned negative readings for most of the countries included in the survey. Bulgaria, Italy and Greece stand at the bottom of the country rankings, while Germany and Belgium again topped the ranks with positive readings.
