The Long Island unemployment rate ended May at 6.1% down 1.1 percentage points (pp) from one year ago and below the State’s unemployment rate of 7.6%. Over the past year, New York State’s trade, transportation & utilities employment climbed by 21.000 jobs, 7.300 of which came from Long Island firms. Jobs gains for the island were also prevalent in natural resources, mining, and construction (+3.300). At the same time New York State lost 13.300 jobs in the manufacturing sector. Long Island was responsible for 1.600 of these jobs.
