Knoxville saw a slow start to 2013, due in part to concerns regarding the effects of sequestration on government contracts. However, there were also signs that the Knoxville economy continues to improve. In February, the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported the unemployment rate in Tennessee dropped to 7.8%. Knox County’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.4 percent, the sixth lowest county unemployment rate in the state.
