Not too many years ago, Berlin’s Lord Mayor Klaus Wowereit labelled the German Capital as “poor but sexy”. Those days are over because Berlin’s financial situation has considerably improved in recent years. This is suggested by the figures of the 2014/2015 two-year budget that Berlin’s Senate presented the other day. It outlines the city government’s plans to achieve a balanced budget within two years’s time. There is more: in addition, provisions totaling 130 million euros are to be set aside and earmarked for the construction of the new international airport BER in Schonefeld.
