The Long Island unemployment rate is currently 6.2% down 1.3 percentage points (pp) from one year ago and 1.3 pp lower than New York State's rate. Nassau County's unemplyment rate dropped to 5.9%, falling below 6.0% for just the second time since 2008. Suffolk County's rate is 0.5 pp higher at 6.4%. From August 2012-August 2013 the private sector added 28,500 jobs. The top industry performers for job growth included professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, and education and health services. These areas added 7.500, 5.700, and 5.700 jobs, respectively. Conversely, during the same period the government sector lost 1.400 jobs.
