2014 got off to a slow start in the Hartford metro area. The unemployment rate, already above the national average of 6.7%, grew from 6.8% to 7.4% in greater Hartford, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. After ending 2013 with 558,500 jobs, the area saw 14,800 jobs lost over the first two months of the year, to finish February at 543,700.

By contrast, the State of Connecticut saw modest improvement in unemployment, with the rate dipping from 7.4% at the end of 2013 down to 7.0% by the end of the quarter. A significant contributor to the lack of growth may be that in both the Hartford metro area and statewide, the largest employment sector, Education and Health Services, remained flat. Meanwhile, the Government, Financial Activities, and Manufacturing industries continued to shed jobs.
