Miami-Dade County made great strides towards economic recovery in 2013. The unemployment rate closed the year at 6.8%, a rate not seen since 2008 when the unemployment rate ended the year at 6.2%. The County continued to generate jobs during 2013 adding approximately 16,000 non-farm payroll jobs during the year and returning close to pre-recession employment figures. According to Miami-Dade County’s Business Economic Development Group, private sector non-farm payroll grew 2.3% while government payrolls declined 3.3% and to date have not recovered those jobs lost since 2008. Government jobs are expected to remain flat and possibly shed jobs in 2014.
