According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the preliminary Maryland unemployment rate for the month of August increased to 6.4 percent. This shows a year-over-year increase of 0.2 percentage points (pp). Maryland still continued to trend above the nation’s unemployment rate of 5.9 percent. In the month of August the number of employed persons in Maryland decreased by 10,372 to 2.9 million. Maryland lost 2,300 jobs in the trade, transportation and utilities sector from July to August while the government added about 4,000 jobs. The information sector also saw a decline in employment with 1,000 jobs lost.
