As 2014 came to a close, the intensely partisan Congress passed a massive funding bill, keeping cost of the government open through 2015, but only extending the Department of Homeland Security funding until February. Despite the political battles the national unemployment rate continued its descent, falling from 5.8% to 5.6% in December, the lowest rate since June 2008. Employers added an average 246,000 jobs a month in 2014, making it the best year for job growth since 1999.
