According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Massachusetts unemployment rate closed November at 5.8%, down 1.3 percentage points (pp) from December 2013. The national unemployment rate was slightly lower than that of Massachusetts, and closed out the year at 5.6%.

The Bay State added jobs at a rate of 1.8% year-over-year. The 59,600 jobs added in 2014 mark the most for a calendar year since 2000. The unemployment rate in the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy metro area closed November at 4.5%, down 1.1 pp from 2013. When isolating the city of Boston alone, the BLS reports an unemployment rate of 5.3%. This figure represents a 1.6 pp decrease over the past year.
