The San Francisco economy started 2013 off with a bang in terms of employment gains. In the twelve months ending in January 2013, the latest data available from the California Employment Development Department, the employment base grew 4.3% with the addition of 41,300 new jobs. Professional and business services led the growth with a record 17,000 new jobs equating to a 7.8% increase, with computer systems design and other professional services accounted for two-thirds of that growth. The unemployment rate dropped from 7.6% one year ago to 6.5% in January 2013, well below the 10.4% average for the state and 8.5% for the U.S.
