Belgian football stadiums - Modernisation vs Risk

Published on

A research produced by

As football reaches fever pitch with the ongoing World Cup in Brazil, questions surround the home of the Belgian national team: the King Baudouin Stadium is behind its international counterparts in terms of modernity. The City of Brussels has launched a call for tenders to develop a new national stadium, as part of its bid to host EURO 2020 matches.

We outline Belgium’s stadiums with a capacity of 20,000 or more seats, and compare them with Europe’s elite. On the basis of various factors we established which potential expansions present more or less risk.

Based on our analysis, there is room for stadium expansion for Anderlecht and Club Brugge as they are rated as the highest in terms of attendance ratio and stand at medium or above in average position over the last 10 years. Genk’s stadium enjoys a good level of attendance despite its lower championship position in the past years. Expanding the capacity of its stadium would therefore imply a mild level of risk.
