Ripe for investment: the Indonesian health care industry post introduction of universal health coverage

Many of us take access to reliable health care for granted, with the World Health Organization (WHO) calling it “a basic human right.” Yet about 150 million people globally suffer financial catastrophe each year, and 100 million are pushed below the poverty line, as a result of having to pay for health care. Indonesia does not rank on par with its Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) neighbors with regard to health care, based on measures such as the numbers of hospital beds, physicians, nurses and midwives per 1,000 people. Its maternal mortality ratio is among the highest in the world.
