At first glance, this lack of institutional engagement seems surprising. Historic capital growth has been very strong and the sector provides steady, if not especially, stellar income returns. Yet institutional investment in the residential sector has still to take off, despite a desire for this to happen among institutions themselves. Policymakers are also keen to promote this activity, seeing it as an alternative and much-needed source of funding for the provision of new homes.
