European Nursing homes : Consolidation in progress 2014

Globally in Europe, population will increase by more than 2% in the next 20 years. Important disparities will differently impact the national context. Combined with a strong ageing of the population, demographic dynamics will be a major issue for some European countries.

These changes in the composition of the population will lead to further needs in healthcare financing and care home beds all across Europe, especially in the long-term care for elderly. In a context of budgetary constraints for most of the European economies, the private sector should be an important sector in the coming years.

The increase in the number (and in the share of the total population) leads to important needs in terms of nursing home beds. In the selected countries, more than 330,000 complementary beds will be needed in 2020, with more than 200,000 beds only for Germany.
